The Knave of Hearts

Given all of their recent troubles, Tranns and Lucien agree that the only way to salvage their relationship is by going to therapy together.  Since there is no therapist in the House, Valero agrees to take on the extra responsibilities.  Things begin to rapidly improve for Tranns and Lucien as they deal with the intimate problems of the loss of their baby, their strained relationship, and shared experiences of loss from their pasts.  Things are not going as well for Philip and Ariadne, however.  Ashamed and embarrassed after seeing Tranns naked, Philip goes into deep brooding mode and despite her best efforts, Ariadne is unable to connect with him.

After a pre-natal examination, Valero tells Adriana and Aden that their baby is healthy and on the way in a month or so.  Elated by this news, Aden decides to throw a small party in the bar, intent on celebrating life in the midst of crisis.  Adriana gathers several couples into the bar:  Philip and Ariadne, Valero and Amorette, Shawn and Casey, Mia and Kazuo.  As the Phoenix Fighters mingle, enjoying cake and each other's company, Aden discovers a deck of cards.  He suggests that they all settle down to play a game of Questions, a card game similar to blackjack where the losers are forced to answer truthfully the questions of the dealer.

The game goes splendidly for a hand or so.  Things take a sudden, frightening turn, however, when Casey goes to try and fetch some more cake from the kitchen.  She notices that the doors to the bar are all locked and apparently from the outside.  As everyone starts to get uncomfortable, the lights in the bar dim and Quinn appears.  He feigns injury at not being invited to play, then informs the group that they are playing with his cards.  Before anyone can respond, Quinn magically ties Casey to the bar and announces that they are going to play a new game of Questions.

Things proceed as normal until the end of the first hand.  Quinn asks the question, "Could you honestly live without your lover?"  Everyone answers honestly except for Aden who lies and says no.  Suddenly, Casey convulses and a ball of light creeps out of her mouth.  Quinn informs the players that the cards were made by a Shadowman carver.  Every lie told by the players slowly pulls a piece of Casey's soul away, turning her into a Shadow Person.

The game progresses and the questions get more and more personal, leaving the players stuck between lying to save face or telling the truth to protect Casey from losing a bit more of her soul.  The couples begin bickering, each learning more about their partner than they ever wanted to know.  Casey, meanwhile, gets weaker and weaker, her complexion slowly changing to that of a Shadow Person.  Soon, Quinn announces that she is one more lie away from being completely transformed.  The couples, burned out and on the verge of tears, play the hand but Quinn shocks everyone when he busts.  Quinn angrily departs and Casey is restored to normal.  Several of the couples, however, are left questioning their relationships.
