When the Bough Breaks

After a blood scare, Aden and Adriana prepare themselves for Adriana's due date when their child will be born.  Things seem to be going smoothly until Philip and Ariadne are suddenly surprised by the appearance of a young, eighteen year old girl named Melora.  She insists that she is the daughter of Adriana and Aden and demands that they be brought to her.  Ariadne sends a confused Philip who retrieves Adriana.  Together, Adriana and Ariadne realize that Melora is the unborn child that the PTB took from Adriana in exchange for her resurrection.

The girl explains that her PTB caretaker accidentally revealed the names of Melora's parents to her and she's been investigating the House for weeks.  Adriana is quite baffled by Melora's appearance and quickly tries to devise a way of keeping the news from Aden.  Melora, however, is determined to learn about her origins.  Disappointed by Adriana's cold reception, she leaves to find Aden.  Along the way, she encounters Kazuo who agrees to introduce her to her father.  Both Kazuo and Adriana find Aden at the same time.

Crushed by Adriana's betrayal, Aden storms down to the bar to get drunk and ends up in a threeway shouting match with Adriana and Tranns as Lucien looks on.  Eventually, he calms down and Adriana tells him the truth.  Meanwhile, Kazuo and Melora talk and Kazuo tries his best to comfort her.  She explains that she is merely curious and doesn't understand the anger the others are displaying.  Everyone who works for the PTB is rational and logical and she will soon become an official member once she passes her trials.  Kazuo asks what the trials are and Melora admits that she doesn't know.

Over the next few days, Melora makes several more strained attempts to connect with her parents.  Finally, she manages to have a conversation with Philip about them.  His words fill her with determination and she asks him to arrange a meeting.  Melora, Aden, and Adriana sit down together and one by one, Melora's questions are answered.  As the three of them begin to connect, Adriana's water breaks.  Aden rushes her to the clinic where Valero helps her to deliver a newborn baby boy who they name Galen Jono Barr.

The House celebrates the birth with gifts and kind words.  Melora, however, becomes distanced from her parents again and soon jealousy grips her heart.  She finally slips a sleeping potion into Aden's coffee and waits for Adriana to fall asleep before sneaking into the clinic and taking Galen.  She goes to the roof, intent on throwing him over the side.  Adriana, however, wakes up in a panic.  Sito comes to her side and with Ariadne's help, locates Melora and Galen.  Melora sadly complains how unfair it is that Galen will receive the love that was meant for her.  Though she desperately wants to throw him, Melora eventually gives Galen to Sito.

Joey appears on the roof to congratulate Melora.  By choosing to place the well being of an innocent over her own feelings, Melora has passed her trials and earned a place as a servant of the PTB.  The entire trip to meet her parents was planned by the PTB from the beginning.  Melora asks to go home and Joey assures her that her PTB powers have been granted.  She asks Sito to say goodbye to her parents for her and and he departs.  Melora begs Joey to take away all her memories of the visit.  Joey agree and Melora vanishes in a burst of light.  Meanwhile, Sito reunites Adriana and Aden with their new son.
