Live Fast and Prosper

Suffering defeat after defeat at the hands of the Phoenix Fighters rubs on Krieg's nerves.  Dejected and lonely, he loudly complains to anyone in the Ebene fortress who will listen.  Most of his minions flee at the sight of him, but one, a young woman, chooses to engage him.  Angrily, he complains that the Phoenix Fighters wouldn't be so much of a problem if the former Guardians and Amorette hadn't joined.  He wishes they had gone to Padua, as planned.  Suddenly, the woman reveals herself to be Rocha, a vengeance demon who causes the world to spin, uttering the words, "Wish granted."

Krieg suddenly finds himself in the town square of city in Padua.  While trying to assess the situation, he spots Amorette buying fruit from a vendor.  With her is Aden, and Krieg is baffled to notice the affection between the two.  The market is crowded and he loses sight of them, so he goes to the vendor for information.  The vendor tells Krieg that Aden and Rette are two of the founders of the Hyperion, a restaurant and detective agency.

Under disguise, Krieg arrives at the Hyperion and discovers the Guardians, along with some new faces, happily running the business.  He realizes that he is in a dimension where the Guardians came straight to Padua without passing through Shaldani.  Adriana is in a courtship with a knight named Lawrence, Aden and Amorette are engaged, and Tranns seems to enjoy wearing skirts.  It doesn’t take him long to discover that some things haven’t changed, however, when he tries to strike up conversation with Ariadne and manages to anger Philip.

Over the next few days, Krieg repeatedly visits the Hyperion and discovers that the Guardians are discontent with their work, and that the detective agency is doing poorly, without many people to help.  Some of them even voice their concern that they should be elsewhere, helping people who really do need helping.  However, they are curious about reports they have been hearing about knights in Padua suddenly becoming vicious, and attacking peasants for no reason.

One night, their wonderings are answered.  A woman named Shawna comes to the Hyperion and announces that the knights are in a field outside the city and have caused the farmers to run away.  It turns out that the knights are reanimated corpses of knights who have been killed, and they are causing random violence under orders.  The Guardians go out to fight them, Krieg following under the guise of an invisibility spell.  The zombies are not easily managed, as they can only be destroyed when their heads are chopped off.  During the long fight, many of the Guardians are hurt, and Krieg is shocked when he seems Amorette run through with a sword and die.

Despite his joy at seeing the suffering of the Guardians, his love for Amorette causes Krieg to demand a return to his former time.  Rocha shows up and reminds him that he can’t take the decision back a second time.  Krieg agrees to return to the way things are, Phoenix Fighters and all, and is relieved to be returned to a Shaldani where Amorette lives on.
